First Congregational Church in Plympton, Massachusetts records, 1698-1809

Early New England Church Records

I’m working on a project to identify all the New England church records before 1900, specifically focusing on outliers in random archives and libraries. I plan to share blog posts highlighting my most interesting discoveries. My research brought me to Boston College in October, specifically to the John J. Burns Library, where I planned to examine a ledger of the First Congregational Church of Plympton, Massachusetts, spanning 1698–1809.

The Boston College Experience

Boston College’s campus in Newton, Massachusetts, is stunning, especially in the fall. Crisp air, colorful autumn leaves, and the serene charm of New England made for a perfect backdrop to my visit. Walking into the Bapst Library, I was in awe of Gargan Hall, a space that feels like stepping into Hogwarts. Within Bapst is the John J. Burns Library, home to special collections and manuscripts, where I had arranged an appointment to study this fascinating church ledger.

According to the Boston College website:

“The volume contains church records from the establishment of the church in 1698 through 1809. It includes historical sketches and listings of baptisms, marriages, church officers, ministers, and deacons.”
The record I examined was a transcription made in 1880.

Call number: MS-2001-033

The Ledger and Its Story

The First Congregational Church ledger opens with “A Brief Statement in Regard to These Records.” The transcription was created in July and August 1880 by Alice Titcomb and her father, Charles Bryant of Granville, Ohio, with the consent of the church’s deacons.

This raises the intriguing question: where is the original ledger from 1880? A query to the church in Plympton revealed they no longer have the original records, suggesting this transcription may be the only surviving copy.

In the transcription, the original book is described as follows:

  • Size: 7-1/4” long, 6” wide, and 1” thick
  • Binding: Parchment
  • Pages: 170, covering baptisms, admissions, marriages, and more
  • Condition: The paper was coarse and browned with age, and much of the ink was fading even in 1880.

The ledger contains contributions from several ministers:

  • Isaac Cushman Jr. (pages 1–19)
  • Rev. Jonathan Parker (pages 19–80)
  • Deacon Josiah Perkins (pages 80–96, with some entries by Parker)
  • Rev. Ezra Sampson (pages 96–116)
  • Deacon Lewis Bradford (pages 116–143, with occasional entries by others)

Transcription of the Opening Pages

Below is an excerpt from the manuscript's introductory statement:

[Charles Bryant wrote this portion.]

A Brief Statement in regard to These Records

The book from which they are taken purports to be the First Volume of the Records of the Congregation Church of Plympton, Mass.

As to the present appearance and condition of the Volume Sept 4, 1880 it may be said
The book is small—seven and a quarter inches long, six inches wide, and five-eighths of an inch in thickness, containing one hundred and seventy pages. It is bound in parchment. The paper is coarse and much browned by age; the ink also in places is much faded and I think will be before many years illegible altogether. A part of the writing is clear, but much of it is in a hand indistinct and difficult to decipher.

The Book for this copy was furnished by Mr. Charles M. Bryant out of Granville, Ohio, for whom the copy has been made, the record of whose ancestors is given in the Volume.

The copying has been done by my daughter, Alice Titcomb, during the months of July and August 1880, under my advice and supervision.

Previous to the commencing of the work I obtained the consent and approval of the Deacons and prominent members of the Church.

It is a copy “verbatim ed literatim” of the original, the lines of the copy conform in all but about four instances, to the lines of the original – The peculiarities and irregularities in the spelling and in the use of capital letters, have been reattained. It has been diligently compared with the original and revised by proof reading and with frequent reference to the records of the Town of Plympton covering the same period of time, from which much assistance in deciphering names &c [and so forth] has been obtained and is as nearly an exact copy of the original as we could make.

[Text transitions to Alice Titcomb’s handwriting:]

In accordance with the foregoing statement, I certify that the copying of this record has been done by me during the months of July and August 1880.

Owing to the indistinctness of the writing, it has required great care and patience. I have used my best judgment and every available resource to make this transcription complete and accurate.

The writing in the original from page 1 to page 19, appears to be in the hand of Isaac Cushman Jr., son of the Rev. Isaac Cushman. From page 19 to page 80, it is in the hand of the Rev. Jonathan Parker. From page 80 to page 96, it appears to be in the hand of Josiah Perkins, the Town Clerk, with the exception of page 88, which Mr. Parker wrote.

Pages 96 to 116 inclusive, except 98 and 99 which are in Mr Parker’s writing, are in the hand of Rev. Ezra Samson.

Deacon Lewis Bradford’s writing runs from page 116 to page 143. He also wrote the matter on pages 1 – 3 and 5 of the book. The little amount of matter on page 4 of this book is in the writing of Isaac Cushman Jr.

The last four pages of the Marriage Record are in the Rev. Ezra Samson’s hand, all the first in that of Rev. Jonathan Parker.

Alice Titcomb

[Back to Charles Bryant’s handwriting:]

We hereby certify that this copy of the First Volume of the Records of the Congregation Church of Plympton, Mass. has been made with our consent and approval.

[Each name appears in a different handwriting,
suggesting these were individually signed]

Deacon Rufus Wright
Deacon Perez Packard
Brother Stephen Drew

Genealogical Notes

The manuscript contains extensive genealogical data, including:

  • Marriages: Pages 144–172 (1732–1785)
  • Baptisms: Pages 7–? (starting in 1695)
  • Admission of Members: Pages 11, 12, 113
  • Catalogs of Members: During Rev. Isaac Cushman’s ministry (page 9) and Rev. Jonathan Parker & Ezra Sampson’s ministry (page 118)

Transcribed Marriage Records (1732–1785)

I photographed all 28 pages of marriage records and transcribed them verbatim to preserve their historical integrity. The names are recorded exactly as written, offering a fascinating glimpse into Plympton’s early community life.
